Food Waste

What is left at the end of our journey tracing the food delivery through the city? We have seen the experience of different people involved along the way, but there is also the material and very visible trace of trash that food delivery leaves behind. Every meal that is delivered to people's homes or ordered for takeout needs to be packaged.

Lieferando alone reported an increase in the number of orders from 34 to 122 million between 2019 and 2020 in Germany. All the pizza cartons, one-use coffee cups and cutlery and other food packaging finally end up as trash in our cities. In Berlin, the local street cleaning company (BSR) has reported an increase in trash volumes in private households, while less of it is collected in the main streets from shops and restaurants. Especially volumes of non-recyclable trash and paper trash (cartons and packaging) have increased, reflecting the changed habits during lockdown.

Since restaurants are closed for more than six months now due to the lockdown, trash bins in public spaces are overflowing with trash from takeout and many of them are being emptied twice a day now, the BSR informs. Still, scenes like the ones in the following pictures can be observed anywhere in the city everyday and show how important the issue of sustainability related to one-use (plastic) packaging is. It is probably one of the most visible and tangible traces of food delivery to be observed at the moment.
